The semi-automatic espresso machine is considered an automatic maker because the water is pumped into the machine instead of manually forced and the pressure is dispelled by a 3-way valve. Unlike the fully automatic, you’ll have to grind the beans, dose and tamper and you’ll also need to control the brew volume, which is why it’s considered a semi-automatic espresso maker.

An automatic espresso machine is a step up from the semi-automatic maker, because it has an inline flow meter so that the pump is automatically turned off once the set amount of water has flowed through it, plus, the brew pressure is automatically dispersed through a three-way solenoid valve.

A super automatic espresso machine is totally automatic and completely self-contained. It grinds the beans, doses and tamps it and extracts the espresso. The only thing you have to do is fill up the bean hopper and the water tank, although there are some super automatic espresso maker models which can be plumbed in so you don’t even have fill it with water. Once the super automatic espresso machine’s brew cycle is finished, it automatically disposes of the used grounds into the disposal container.

Many of the automatic espresso machines come with adjustable dosing, water flow and shot temperature, as well as an automated milk frothing mechanism. The super automatic espresso machine models have become extremely popular for home use and some companies now build automatic espresso machines which are designed to be built-in to your kitchen. Built-in automatic home espresso machines are quickly becoming a top pick for people who don’t their espresso machine cluttering up precious counter space.
